More than Just a Uniform

Words by 2023 School Captain, Aredith Janarth

Graduation Ceremony: 22 September 2023

Today is a day of reflection and thanks. A day to consider what it means to be a part of a legacy that stretches back generations. Generations who, like us, have all donned the same distinctive grey and red jacket. Our uniform represents a long-standing military history and symbolises our duty to live a life in the service of others. The uniform marks us as Kingsmen.

Our uniform is not just a red stripe down the side of our trousers, a scroll on our sleeves, or shiny silver buttons. Our uniform tells a story that stretches back to 1831, and like our jackets that have been carefully woven together, so too has the story of Kingsmen. It is a story crafted from history, which acknowledges the sacrifices of those who have gone before us.

To my mates beside me, the graduating class of 2023. This uniform connects us – it binds us together in friendship and camaraderie. It represents the unity, mateship, and brotherhood we have forged. So, as we leave the sandstone gates of King’s and don our uniform for the last time, what it stands for lasts a lifetime. It is about mates who are there for each other, dependable, and willing to put the needs of others ahead of their own.

Now it is our time to go out into the world. To explore new avenues, dream big and take risks. It is time for us to make our mark, make the world a better place, stand up for what is right, make tough decisions, and lead by example.

I ask you to hold fast to that faith written into our founding documents. An idea whispered by past generations of Kingsmen, and a spirit sung by thousands Kingsmen down at the White. A creed reaffirmed by those who walked before us and made sacrifices for us to be here today. A creed at the core of every Kingsman who sits before you here today.

Fortiter et Fideliter, Bravely and Faithfully.

Boys, it has been an incredible year and I will miss you all very dearly. I am very proud to be a Kingsman. It has been an honour and a privilege, to be your school captain for 2023.
