The Council of The King's School

The King’s School is governed through a School Council that meets regularly throughout a year to direct the School’s affairs. There are also several sub-committees covering areas such as finance, property, scholarships and compliance. 

The majority of Council members are appointed by the Anglican Church Diocese of Sydney and the President of the School Council is the Archbishop of Sydney. 

A number of Council members are appointed by members of the Old Boys’ Union of The School. Members appointed directly by the Council are sometimes added.

Chairman of The King’s School Council

With over 35 years’ experience as a senior executive in banking, finance, energy markets and trading, Ken has served as Governor of The King’s School since 2018 and Chairman of Council since 2023. He is also a Director of The King’s School Foundation and The Tudor House Foundation, and sits on several Foundation committees. His governance experience includes long-standing service on a range of corporate boards and educationally focused organisations. He currently serves on the Board of Moore Theological College.

In his executive career, Ken held senior leadership roles at a number of financial institutions, including ASX Limited and RMB Australia. He brings expertise in strategy development, risk management and regulatory engagement, alongside a lifelong dedication to The King’s School’s heritage and values.

As a second-generation Old Boy and former Baker House boarder, Ken and his wife Judy are parents of Sam (TKS ’07) and Max (TKS ’14).  His family’s connection to King’s dates back to the School’s founding, with his ancestor, George Suttor, being the father of the School’s first enrolled student.  Ken and Judy are active members of St Thomas’ Anglican Church, North Sydney.

Mrs Julia Anderson BEd (Syd)

Mrs Julia Anderson brings a lifetime of service to education, family, and community, together with a deep and multi generational connection to The King’s School. A trained teacher and former Senior Prefect (Head Girl) of New England Girls School (NEGS) Armidale, Julia began her career in the classroom before dedicating many years to raising her family and supporting her husband’s parliamentary service from 1989 to 2007. She is the mother of Jessica, Nicholas, Georgina, Laura and Andrew (dec), and grandmother to eight children.

Alongside her family commitments, Julia has contributed extensively to national and community organisations. She has served as National Patron of Defence Force Families, supported the Canberra Hospital Paediatric ICU, and held committee roles with the Children’s Medical Research Institute. A Scripture Teacher since 1992, she has also served as the inaugural Director of Scripture Union’s Ride Like a Girl camp (2021–2026) and as Patron of St Philip’s Young Parents’ School. Julia manages the cattle operations on her family’s farm and continues to play an active role in rural community life.
Julia’s breadth of experience, strong Christian faith, and longstanding commitment to the wellbeing of young people equip her to make a valuable contribution to the governance of The King’s School.

Julia’s ties to King’s span four generations: her husband John (TKS ’74), brother, son Nicholas (TKS ’07), brother and father in law Duncan (TKS ’36) all attended the School, and her own family heritage reaches back to its earliest days. Julia’s ancestor, George Suttor, was the father of the first boy enrolled at King’s.

Chairman of the Finance & Audit Sub-Committee

Mark is a senior taxation specialist with more than three decades of experience in corporate tax, financial governance and regulatory engagement. He is the Head of Tax at Qantas, a role he has held for over 20 years, and previously spent 14 years with KPMG, including two years leading the Australian Tax Desk in Washington, DC. Mark is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, an Associate of the Tax Institute of Australia, and contributes to the CAANZ program as a Tax Module Leader and Examiner.

Mark brings extensive experience to the Council from national and international advisory bodies. He serves on the Corporate Taxpayers Association Executive Committee, the CAANZ Tax Technical Committee, the ATO Large Business Stewardship Group and Treasury’s Tax Treaty Advisory Panel. He also chairs the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Tax Working Group and has represented the global airline industry at the United Nations and OECD on significant international tax matters.

A graduate of The King’s School (Macquarie House, 1989), Mark was appointed to Council in 2014 as a Synod representative. He currently serves as Chair of the Finance Subcommittee, having previously served as Treasurer from 2021 to 2024.

Mark and his wife have three sons, all Old Boys of the School. He attends Castle Hill Anglican Church and remains closely involved in sport, including playing for the TKS Old Boys’ football team alongside his sons. He has also contributed to a range of not for profit organisations, including Biathlon Australia and the Moerlina Ski Club, and has been active in several King’s community associations.

Andrew is an experienced CEO, board member and commercial leader with more than 30 years’ experience across education, technology, financial services and not-for-profit sectors. He has held senior executive and board roles spanning strategy, governance, revenue growth and large-scale organisational transformation. Andrew is the founder of a technology and professional services business that was successfully scaled across the Asia-Pacific region and acquired by a listed multinational. He has led enterprise technology, data and transformation initiatives for complex organisations operating in regulated environments.

Andrew brings a deep understanding of education and youth leadership, having spent his early career in teaching and school leadership roles, including as a Housemaster and Director of Outdoor Education. He has also served as Chair of the Halogen Foundation Australia, a not-for-profit organisation delivering leadership programs to tens of thousands of school students across Australia and Singapore.

Andrew is married with three children, is a member of The Bridge Church, and holds a Diploma in Christian Studies from Regent College in Vancouver. He played over 300 games for the Kings Old Boys Rugby Club and coached for many years.

Andrew was appointed to the School Council in 2024, where, as a member of the Property & Projects Sub-Committee, he contributes particular expertise in governance, technology strategy, major projects and organisational execution, supporting The King’s School’s commitment to excellence in education, character development and long-term stewardship.

Associate Professor Christine Grice BADipEd(Maq), MEd(Syd), PhD(Syd)

Christine brings to the Council of The King’s School more than 30 years of experience in education, leadership, research, and governance across schools and universities. Her connection to King’s began in 1997 when she commenced her teaching career at The King’s School Preparatory School in Parramatta – an experience that shaped her enduring commitment to the formation of young people.

Christine is now a well cited educational leadership researcher, philosopher, and author. She has led and co led major national and international research projects on school leadership, many of which have directly informed educational policy and practice. She currently serves as the Coordinator of the Bachelor of Advanced Studies in Education at The University of Sydney, where she works closely with school and system leaders to strengthen the evidence base for effective leadership and learning.

Christine’s professional background includes extensive experience in teaching, curriculum leadership, and school governance, both in Australia and the United Kingdom. She serves as an Anglican Synod representative on Council, and her Christian faith is central to her vocation as an educator and leader.

Christine brings to King’s a rare combination of scholarly expertise, practical school experience, and a deep understanding of how leadership shapes student formation. She is also remembered fondly within the School community for a personal milestone she still counts among her proudest achievements – being named The King’s School Rugby Coach of the Year in 1999 for an undefeated season!

The Right Reverend Bishop Gary Koo MBBS (Syd), BD (MTC),

Member of the Finance and Audit Sub-Committee

Gary is the Bishop of Western Sydney and brings to the Council of The King’s School a distinguished record of Christian leadership, community service, and deep personal understanding of Western Sydney’s cultural and social landscape.

Consecrated Bishop in 2019 and commencing his regional oversight in 2020, Bishop Koo has long been recognised for his pastoral wisdom, cross cultural experience, and commitment to forming resilient, compassionate young leaders.

Born in Sydney to Malaysian migrant parents, Bishop Koo grew up in Ermington and Carlingford before studying medicine at the University of Sydney. While training as a doctor, he embraced the Christian faith and later retrained for ministry at Moore Theological College. He was ordained in 2007 and served in a range of ministry contexts, including as a pastor and church planter with the Chinese Christian Church, Sydney. He later became Senior Minister of St Paul’s Carlingford & North Rocks, leading a large multi congregational church for seven years.

Bishop Koo’s ministry has been shaped by extensive experience in second generation Asian ministry and the diverse communities of Western Sydney. He also serves on the Board of Anglican Community Services (Anglicare), contributing to the wider Anglican Church’s mission and social engagement.

Appointed to the School Council in 2022, Gary is a strong advocate for the role of schools in shaping character and crossing cultures. He believes King’s is uniquely placed to serve the region by developing young men of integrity, courage, and faith.

Gary is married to Pearl, and they have two adult children, Tomas and Annabel.

The Reverend Canon Tim Swan MA(Theol) (MTC), BTh (MTC), DipMin (MTC), BMus (Syd), A.Mus.A

Chairman of the Risk Governance & Compliance Sub-Committee

Tim is married to Sally, and they have five children. He has been both a prep and senior school parent, with two sons who graduated from King’s (Lachlan (TKS ’18) and Edward (TKS ’24), and comes from a multi-generational King’s family.

Tim is the CEO of Anglican Aid and oversees aid and development projects in 38 nations, including school building projects in places like DR Congo, Sudan, and Tanzania. He and the family previously spent ten years in Santiago, where he helped establish a theological college for the Anglican Church of Chile. After returning to Sydney, Tim was Rector of Willoughby Park Anglican Church.

Tim joined the School Council in 2021 and is Chair of the Risk, Governance and Compliance Sub-Committee. He has been known to join Council meetings from South Sudan, where he also serves on the Council of The Episcopal University.

Tim serves on the School Council because he acutely sees the need to raise up more young men who will act bravely and faithfully for the good of our global society.

In his spare time, he loves playing the piano, surfing with his sons, and cycling with friends.

The Reverend James Warren (TKS ‘ 87) BD(MTC), BTh(MTC)

James has served in theological education, pastoral ministry and leadership development for more than 30 years. He is the Senior Minister of Engadine–Heathcote Anglican Church, where he leads a large multi congregational parish and oversees a broad range of ministry and community programs. He has been involved in the formation of Anglican ministers since 1993 and continues to play a significant role in clergy development as a Ministry Training & Development Mentor and as a Sydney Anglican Ordination Chaplain.

James has a long history of governance within the Anglican Church at local, diocesan and national levels. His experience spans parish leadership, synod representation, and advisory roles supporting the development and oversight of ministry standards and training pathways. He is widely regarded for his pastoral wisdom, commitment to Christian formation, and deep investment in the next generation of church leaders.

A graduate of The King’s School (TKS ‘87), James was appointed to the School Council in 2020. He brings to Council extensive experience in leadership, governance and Christian education, together with a strong commitment to the School’s mission of developing young men of character, faith and service.

James is married to Di, and they have three children.

The Reverend Matthew Whitfield MA (Theol) (MTC), BDiv (MTC), BSc (USyd)

Matthew Whitfield is the Senior Minister of West Ryde Anglican Church. Prior to this appointment, he served on the ministry teams of two large Anglican churches in Sydney, contributing to preaching, pastoral leadership and the development of church communities.

Before entering Christian ministry, Matthew worked in Human Resources, bringing experience in organisational leadership, people development and governance.

Matthew joined the School Council in 2025 and serves on the Governance, Risk and Compliance Subcommittee.

He is married to Belinda, and they have three children.

Mrs Emma Maple-Brown BA (Hons)/LLB (Hons) (Syd), GAICD

Emma was elected to the School Council as an OBU Representative Governor in 2023 and serves on the Risk, Governance and Compliance Sub-Committee.

A qualified lawyer with more than 20 years’ experience in corporate and governance roles across the legal and not-for-profit sectors, Emma currently serves on several not-for-profit boards and holds a Company Secretary role. Emma is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Emma and her husband, Andrew Maple-Brown (TKS ’91), have four children. Their three sons have attended King’s, with two currently enrolled. Emma has also volunteered within the School community, including as Secretary of the TKS Cricket Club and in Educational Support Services.

Ed is a fourth generation Old Boy (’95) and a parent of 2 boys currently at the School, and 1 boy who graduated in 2024.

Ed is an experienced investment professional with a career spanning funds management, asset development and strategic advisory roles. Ed is currently a senior executive at a fund manager focused on unlisted investments in infrastructure, energy, and sustainability. Ed sits on the boards of a number of their investee companies and is focused on growing portfolio companies to deliver investment returns.

Ed joined the Council in 2020 and brings a strong understanding of finance, governance, risk, and long-term asset stewardship.

Mr Rowland Long (TKS ’88) BMgt (Syd), MAICD

Rowly brings more than 30 years of experience in corporate consulting, governance, and strategic advisory work to the Council of The King’s School. A member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Rowly has built a career advising organisations on strategy, operational improvement, and organisational performance. His background in corporate consulting equips him with a strong understanding of risk, governance, and the practical requirements of delivering complex projects – skills that directly support the School’s commitment to excellence in planning and execution.

Elected to Council in 2020, Rowly contributes his professional expertise as Chairman of the Property & Projects Sub Committee, helping to guide the School’s long term planning and stewardship of its significant campus assets. He brings to Council a thoughtful, strategic perspective, a commitment to service, and a genuine belief in the importance of a King’s education in shaping future leaders of character and purpose.

Rowly is a graduate of The King’s School and has three sons graduate from the School, giving him a grounded appreciation of the School’s culture, values, and aspirations for young men.

Mr Charlie Taylor (TKS ’80) MPhil(Cantab), BEc/LLB(Syd)

Charlie was elected to the School Council as an OBU Representative Governor in 2022 and has served as Chair of the People and Culture Sub Committee since 2024. He has been a Director of The King’s School Foundation since 2019.

Over a 30-year career with McKinsey & Company, Charlie advised companies and government agencies across Australia, Asia, and the United States, working extensively with tertiary and secondary education organisations and leading global research into high-performing schools, character education, and academic value-add. He lived and worked in Sydney, New York, Jakarta, and Singapore, leading McKinsey’s Asian Infrastructure and Australian Health and Public Sector practices, and now continues to advise the firm while serving as a Non Executive Director of ASX listed Healius and Conneqt. Charlie has also contributed widely to public policy and community organisations, including as Chair of the NSW Innovation and Productivity Council, and holds non executive roles with McLaughlin River Pastoral Company, Research Australia, and the Woolcock Institute. He chaired St Andrew’s College at the University of Sydney for nine years and is now Deputy Chair of its Foundation, where he also teaches Complex Problem Solving.

A proud Old Boy, former boarder, Charlie brings a deep personal commitment to the School’s life and values. He is dedicated to supporting King’s continued leadership in character formation, Christian education, and academic excellence. Charlie and his wife, Kelley, are parents of four Kingsmen – all boarders (Will (’13), Hugh (’14), Jack (’18 and Callum (’20)).

Mr Peter Whittington (TKS ’97) MBA(UTS), DipFP (Kaplan)

Peter is an executive leader who has worked primarily within the financial services sector and has also spent time in the not-for-profit and construction industries. He loved his time at King’s and was grateful for the opportunity to attend, be shaped by wonderful teachers, and make friends from all over the countryside.

Following his time at King’s, Peter joined the Old Boys’ Union, where he has organised countless events, including Young Members functions, Commem Days, Annual Dinners, and Business Networking events, and later served as President of the OBU in 2015-16. Additionally, he has played 300 games of rugby for the Old Boys’ Rugby Club and was President from 2006-10. His contribution to the game continues in his role as Deputy-Chair of The Rugby Club Foundation, and he previously served on the Board of the NSW Suburban Rugby Union. Recognising that he is now getting too old to hold up scrums, he has recently become President of the Gazelles Netball Club at Castle Hill, where his three daughters have all enjoyed their time.

Elected to the School Council in 2016, Peter has served on the Scholarships Committee (as Chair in 2021-24), Risk & Audit, and, most recently, the People & Culture Committee. In addition, he is a Director of The King’s School Foundation. He is a firm believer in the values espoused by the School and is excited by the opportunity King’s provides its students to make a positive impact on their lives and communities.

The School Executive has whole School accountability across the Senior School, the Preparatory School and Tudor House, combined with direct contact with students and parents. They provide strategic influence via guiding, leading and collaborating across the appropriate leaders in each campus and department of the School.
