Music in the Preparatory School

Music in the Preparatory School

The Preparatory School has a vibrant Music Department. Music is part and parcel of what Prep boys do. Our team of professional musicians and educators works tirelessly to inspire young musicians in the School. A rigorous class teaching program, choir membership, instrumental programs, and a wide range of visiting performers and performance opportunities promotes music in the life of each boy.

So how is this done?

All boys participate in a weekly music lesson in our purpose-built Music Centre, with access to a wide range of classroom and orchestral percussion instruments. These lessons actively engage the boys in listening, composing and performing.

  • In Year 2, all boys are given the opportunity to learn violin or cello, through a carefully crafted small group tuition string program.
  • In Year 4, all boys are provided with the opportunities either to continue with their string instruments, or to try a band instrument for a year.
  • By the time boys reach Years 5 and 6, many of them are regularly taking AMEB/Trinity music examinations and are committed members of the ensembles.

These currently include our Concert Band, Stage Band, String Orchestra, Chamber String Orchestra, Flute Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble.

The voice is used as one of the key teaching tools in the Preparatory School. All boys are encouraged to sing, and to sing well. Through a varied concert schedule, all boys in the School are given opportunities to perform in choral groups several times a year. Performance opportunities vary from the Fathers' Day Breakfast for Kindergarten boys, to the Chamber Choir singing at the wedding of an Old Boy; from a massed choir of Infants, to a select vocal group performing at the Sydney Eisteddfod. All Prep boys sing and the sound they create is truly inspiring!

We are regular participants in Sydney's major eisteddfods, with our instrumental and choral groups. In 2011 our Chamber Choir, under the direction of Director of Music, Jonathan Todhunter, gained first place in the Australasian Primary School Championship Final. Performing at such events broadens the musical horizons of our young musicians. The blend of a well resourced department, a stimulating program and a supportive parent body enables us to foster in the boys a lifelong love of music.
