Bequests & Major Gift Giving
Your Legacy is their Future.
Established in 1831, The King’s School is Australia’s oldest independent school. At the heart of the King’s School lies a culture of generosity and philanthropy.
Our facilities, scholarships, bursaries, prizes and programs are largely the result of the generosity of previous generations who have invested in our boys and their School. This legacy giving is at the centre of the School’s heritage and the goodwill to ensure King’s thrives into the future, bravely and faithfully.
Why Leave a Gift in Your Will?
A bequest or gift in your will is a meaningful way to continue supporting The King’s School even after your lifetime. Every bequest strengthens the future of our community. By including The King’s School Foundation in your estate planning, you become a part of a legacy that reaches the future generations of students by empowering them to reach their full potential in academics, character, and leadership.
Your contribution will have a lasting impact, helping us to provide scholarships that open doors to deserving students, enhance our educational facilities to offer the best learning environment, and fund innovative programs that prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities of life.
A gift in your Will allows us to preserve the rich traditions of The King’s School while also embracing new possibilities, creating a dynamic educational experience that nurtures the minds and spirits of our students.
Your Gift Will Make a Difference
Whether large or small, your gift can help us provide scholarships, enhance educational facilities, and fund life-changing programs that align with our mission and values. It ensures that The King’s School continues to thrive and excel in its mission of shaping the next generation of leaders. By leaving a gift in your Will, you are investing in a future where your legacy of generosity and belief in the power of education will touch countless lives for years to come.
Benefits of leaving a Bequest:
- Shape the future of education and continue your values beyond your lifetime.
- Bequests are generally exempt from inheritance tax, making them a tax-effective way to give.
- Choose how your gift will be used to make a lasting difference.
From Gift to Impact
Archer Holz
Archer Holz’s journey from the close-knit community of Lightning Ridge, NSW, to the dynamic environment of The King’s School was nothing short of transformative. At just nine years old, his parents recognised Archer’s need for greater challenges and opportunities. This drive led him to earn a scholarship in Year 7, allowing him to attend King’s as a boarder during his Senior School years.
“Receiving the Violet Macansh Scholarship motivated me to do everything to the best of my ability,” says Archer. “At King’s, I learned the importance of being a good person before anything else, which is why I love King’s. It’s so important to try as much as possible while you’re there. It doesn’t matter if you try something and fail; at The King’s School, there is nothing to lose.” – Archer Holz

FAQs
Yes, it is absolutely worthwhile. Over time, and with sound management to retain and grow the capital, funds invested distribute many times their initial capital value to assist the School and King’s boys. Even modest gifts can have a substantial impact in assisting boys with financial need. It is your commitment to securing our future that counts.
Yes, some donors would love to start a scholarship program in their lifetime and can do so by committing to fund the fees on an annual basis, and then provide the capital sum for a perpetual scholarship via a gift in their Will.
Yes, in general the minimum donation required to establish a named Academic/Music/Boarding/ Indigenous Scholarship in perpetuity is $1M+. Smaller amounts are welcome and can be directed to The King’s School Foundation Scholarship, Bursaries & Prizes Fund.
Given the significant change in the value of money over time, and to save you revising your Will regularly, a gift as a percentage of your Will maintains the real value of what you intend to give to King’s and to other beneficiaries.
The Foundation has the benefit of expert advice to carefully and conservatively manage all of its endowed funds, to maximise their return on a long-term basis. An important part of the Foundation’s role is to provide advice and oversight on funds which have been entrusted to King’s, and ensure they are used as the donor intended. The Board also has the benefit of external expert advice. This is performed without cost to the Foundation’s endowed funds. Commercial entities often charge significant fees for their services which reduces the impact of your gift. We recommend that you seek independent financial and legal advice when writing your Will or adding a Codicil to your Will.
