Nearly 850 King’s cadets in Years 9 to 12 recently returned from our Cadet Corps Annual Field Exercise (AFX) in Singleton.
The boys had a fantastic time, challenging themselves and overcoming each obstacle placed in front of them. AFX also provides an opportunity for our senior boys to lead those in younger year groups, practising their leadership and organisational skills over a range of activities including:
High Ropes – In this experience, cadets are challenged with an elevation of around 20 metres, as they navigate a high ropes obstacle course. The activity encourages and rewards cadets to step out of their comfort zones – whether it’s facing a fear of heights or simply enjoying the thrill of it. Platoons need to climb across ropes, through hanging tyres and finish with an exciting ride down the flying fox.
Drones – Cadets program drones to fly through a series of obstacles, testing both technical skills and teamwork. They must work together to plan, troubleshoot and guide the drone successfully. The activity builds communication, problem-solving and collaboration under pressure. It encourages leadership and strategic thinking, offering a hands-on challenge that blends coding with cooperation in a dynamic and engaging way.
Confidence Course – Cadets work through various activity stations, such as the tightrope or wombat hole. Traversing these obstacles tests a platoon’s strength and endurance in the field. For platoons to gain the most points, they must not only give their best effort, but also complete these activities in the least amount of time possible.
Reflecting on the experience, the boys shared their favourite parts of AFX. Charlie mentioned, “Sitting around the fire with my fellow cadets and getting to expand my SES knowledge”, while Austen said, “Watching the band (especially Drum Corps) improve as we practise throughout training parades”. Cameron shared, “the mateship made at Corps and the environment we get to grow in as people”.
