We are doing something infinitely more exciting than preparing a boy for a career. We are preparing him for life. We aim to teach our students to enjoy learning, respect ability, think critically, be creative, manage change, communicate well and be skilled in using information technology.
An all-round education
As well as enjoying wonderful academic facilities, The King's School has excellent sporting facilities including an Olympic-sized swimming pool and separate 25m swimming pool for the Preparatory School, gym, rowing facilities, rifle range and many acres of playing fields. There are age restrictions on the use of some facilities but The King's School does provide even the youngest student with a treasure trove of opportunity and adventure.
In the Preparatory School, students in Years Three - Six can attend "Club King's", an after school program which concentrates on homework tasks, board games, science, computing, art and woodwork. Many hobby groups also flourish including fishing rod making, pottery, painting, music and drama, debating, model making, photography, horticulture, needlework, first aid, cooking, etiquette and chess.
On Saturdays all Prep students engage in sport which forms a central part of the co-curricular program of the school. These activities bear testimony to a school committed to providing your son with an all-round education. The Curriculum
A standard curriculum is only acceptable in a standard school. Great places of learning stray well beyond the mandated limits of ordinary instruction. Mathematics includes number, measurement, space and working mathematically. English includes reading, writing, talking, listening, spelling and handwriting. Science and Technology has an emphasis on investigating, designing and making and problem solving using technology Computing facilities form a component of the Science and Technology syllabus. Human Society and Its Environment ( HSIE ) seeks to encourage a deeper appreciation of history, languages, societies and cultures. Languages other than English ( LOTE ) is part of the HSIE syllabus. Students study a range of modern languages. Visual Arts, Music and Drama are taught in specialist facilities to support the program. A large portion of King's men learn a musical instrument and there are many bands, ensembles and choirs. Christian Studies includes Biblical studies, ethics and comparative religion. Personal Development, Health and Physical Education ( PDHPE ) includes sport, games and health studies. Woodwork programs are available to boys from Year Three onwards.
The heart of The King's School lies in delivering a balanced education to its students and this is reflected in its curriculum. Christian Values
The King's School is a Christian school. Students are encouraged to reflect on spiritual matters and upon those ethics and values that are worthy of a civilized society.
Formal worship forms part of the educational experience with all students being required to attend services. Christian studies are part of The King's School curriculum as is the study of other religions. Students from all faiths are welcomed but it should be recognized that a study of the Christian gospel will form a central part of a student's education.
Although participation in Christian study and Christian worship is compulsory for all students, it is not a prerequisite for enrolment that your son be actively involved in a church, and neither is he disqualified if he is from a different faith background.
In an age which is increasingly secular and without moral direction, The King's School provides an education that has central to it the teaching of Christian values. Community
The strength of The King's School lies in the fact that it is not an institution but a community. An effective education is only achieved in parnership with the home.
Parents as well as sons are made welcome into an educational ‘family' that is The King's School. It is a family that will provide a network of friends that will care for each other, not only through the school years but also beyond.
Active parent groups work to support the school and help reinforce the fact that The King's School is not just a school, it is a community.
Boarding
Although mainly a school for day students, The King's School is also one of the largest boarding schools in Australia. This makes King's accessible to families who may live far away from the school, including those who live in country areas and overseas.
King's men enrolled in Years Four and upwards may board either as full boarders or weekly boarders who go home on weekends. Weekly boarding is becoming particularly attractive as an option for busy parents who are looking for the best of both worlds: an excellent education during the week, yet the capacity to spend quality recreational time with their sons on the weekend.
The Prep boarding facilities are centred in the glorious splendour of the Gowan Brae mansion which adjoins the Preparatory School. Run by a devoted staff, including a Housemaster, tutors and matron, a homely environment is provided for boarders.
Parents choose boarding as an option for their sons for many reasons. Some register a liking for the extra academic help available to students after normal school hours. A number of parents also value the security that a boarding environment can give, where students are supervised at all times and acceptable group 'norms' are established which encourage appropriate behaviours.
Perhaps one of the most significant benefits that boarding can give is to train students in what it means to live in community. A boarding experience can require students to be mindful of the needs and opinions of others.
Among the options available to families, The King's School is pleased that listed among them is the option of boarding.
