THE INFANTS' SCHOOL (K - 2)

At King's we know that there are many issues that are important to you. We have listed some common questions and answers for your interest.

A vital part of the Preparatory School is the Infants' School, which incorporates students from Kindergarten to Year Two. Delightful facilities have been built that provide a stimulating yet safe environment for students.

A designated play area is set aside for Infants' School students but they are also free to integrate with the rest of the Prep School should they wish. The Infants' School is designed to provide a wonderful experience, for it is important that a young boy's introduction to schooling be a positive one. The fact that our students associate school with being a pleasure is in no small way linked to the start they were given in the Infants' school.

How old should a boy be to start Kindergarten?

He should have turned five by March 31 of the entry year. In exceptional cases a later birthday might be acceptable. However it is likely to be in the best interests of the boy if he starts school older rather than younger.

How many classes are there?
There are two classes each of Kindergarten to Year Two.

How many boys are in each class?
20-22 boys are in each class.

What do the boys learn?
Boys participate in an enriched curriculum in six Key Learning Areas:
1 English, incorporating the Spalding literacy program
2. Mathematics
3. Science and Technology
4. Human Society and Its Environment ( Christian Studies; LOTE )
5. Creative and Practical Arts ( Visual Arts, Music, Drama )
6. Personal Development, Health and Physical Education.

How long is the day?
Boys may arrive after 7.45 am. Their school day commences at 8.25 am and finishes at 2.50 pm. After school care is available ( user pays ).

Do Subject Specialists teach students?
Boys have talented specialist teachers for Music, French, Visual Arts, P.E, Christian Studies, Computers and Library.

What happens in the enrolment process?
Prospective students and their parents will be asked to meet with the Head of the Preparatory School, Mr Keith Dalleywater, or Mrs Belinda Baxter, Director of Infants. Once interviews have been conducted, places will be offered based on such criteria as readiness for school, prior or current family connections with King's and the likelihood of the boy and his family contributing well to the life of the school.

After the first round of offers, parents will have two weeks to respond, after which time their place will be made available to others on the waiting list. During November there will be an opportunity for the boys and their parents to attend the Kindergarten Orientation Day to experience something of school life at TKS.

How can you best prepare your son for 'big school'?
- Share exciting adventures from your school days. Focus on the positive.
- Encourage play with other children and sharing of toys.
- Encourage your son to practise putting shoes on the correct feet.
- Ensure that your son can recognize his full name.
- If your son is ready to write his full name, ensure that it starts with a capital letter and proceeds with lower case letters.
- Promote concentration by expecting your son to persist with achievable tasks.
- Select good stories to read, encouraging your son to listen, to answer simple questions and predict endings.
- Encourage correct grammar in speech and discourage ‘baby talk'.
- Encourage an interest in creative activities using scissors, pencils, paint, brushes, paste and a range of materials
- Model and encourage correct pencil grip.
- Give your son some areas of responsibility at home and ensure that expectations are met.
- Let your son know how precious he is and that he is loved.
