A Great Start Having a son at the King's School will give him a start in life which he should enjoy for the rest of his days. Little is more precious than a good education and King's is able to provide outstanding teaching within a happy and caring environment.
The King's School is Australia's oldest independent school and one of the most well known and admired schools in the land. It has developed an enviable reputation for producing many of Australia's leaders. Wonderful resources King's men are extremely fortunate in being able to enjoy nearly 145 hectares of beautiful parkland whilst attending a school in the center of Australia's biggest city. With the largest grounds of any Sydney school, your son will have space to explore, run, play, think and reflect.
The Preparatory School rests in the shadows of a magnificent 19th century mansion, Gowan Brae, which is home to the Prep boarders and Year Seven students. Its beautiful sandstone stables have been converted into gracious teaching spaces and purpose built classrooms.
As well as woodwork, art and music rooms, a well-stocked library, hall, chapel and acres of playing fields, there is a technology center, which is one of the best to be seen in the country. Within this center your son can develop his ideas theoretically using computers and test them in the experimental place.
An ongoing building program is in place to ensure that The King's School continues to offer its students wonderful resources.
Understanding Boys The King's School is a national leader in the art of educating boys. At a time when their seems to be a preoccupation with the difficulties faced by boys in school, we are proud to be a school that is providing answers.
Being an all-boy school, teaching techniques can be used that have been shown to be particularly effective with boys. Reading schemes, activity-based learning, projects and organizational tasks are designed to build upon the preferred learning styles of boys.
Help in educating our students is enlisted from the home, with mothers and fathers becoming partners and teachers. "Parent-son" excursions and "take-home" reading schemes are examples of just a few initiatives taken to link home with school.
A good mix of male and female teachers helps in providing good role models for your son. Our staff enjoy teaching and are expert in understanding boys.
Individual Attention
We believe that every King's man is unique, that every King's man has talent and that every King's man deserves to be treated as an individual. The meeting of these personal needs is central to the mission of the King's School.
Class sizes are such that each student enjoys a great deal of individual attention. Assisting teachers in this task is a range of specialist staff who are able to extend those who are gifted and talented and assist those who may need remediation in some areas. Sometimes a student may be withdrawn for individual work or work in a small group.
Progress is monitored and feedback given to both parents and students. Students learn to work individually and as a member of a small group.
A wide range of support staff is available to students, including a School Counsellor and Chaplain. Further assistance comes from a range of visiting such as speech pathologists and occupational therapists.
Academic Excellence:
The King's School strives for the very highest academic standards but does not do so at the expense of a balanced education.
Whilst academic excellence is the goal, it is recognized that the true quest is to realise potential, so that no King's man should fail to have his gifts and abilities developed. In an age that often seems to be content with the mediocre, The King's School strives for high academic standards. To assist in this, The King's School offers:
- A Scholars' Class which is a specialized class for gifted students in Years Five and Six.
- The Challenge Program, an in-house program for gifted and talented students in Kindergarten - Year Six.
- Participation in The Tournament of Minds, The Maths Olympiad and other external enrichment programs
- Ability graded classes for Mathematics and English in Years Four - Six.
These initiatives and others are designed to ensure that the name of The King's School is synonymous with academic excellence.
