Youngest Kingsmen display innovation and creativity at Easter Hat Parade

In the last week of Term 1 our Prep students had a great time designing and building Easter hats for the annual Easter Hat Parade.

The boys were encouraged to bring materials in from home to use in the construction of their hats, meaning that they have to put their creative and versatile thinking skills to use in a tactile way. Not only were the hat designs impressive, the young Kingsmen also needed to ensure that their finished product stayed balanced on their head!

Musical excellence

John Wu (Year 5) was rewarded for his dedication and hard work winning the Sydney Eisteddfod, and unlike any other Sydney Eisteddfod events, this significant award is decided purely through audience vote. John presented a beautiful rendition of David Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody, Op. 68 which evidently struck a chord with many audience members.

In the 2016 Sydney Eisteddfod John also won 1st place in the Viola, Cello and Double Bass (12/u) event and 2nd place in the Viola, Cello and Double Bass (19/u) event.

Also achieving a magnificent musical milestone is Lawrence Wei, Prep School Music Captain, who completed his piano LmusA Diploma examinations, achieving a Distinction. Lawrence also holds an Associate Diploma on cellp and will shortly be takling his Grade 6 french hjorn examinations.

Strategic moves promote life skills

Recently, 90 boys from Years 1 to 6 competed in the annual Prep School Chess Championship. Why chess? The benefits of playing chess cannot be underestimated. The game provides practice for the boys to make accurate and fast decisions under time pressure, whilst teaching them to think logically.

With so many boys from across all age groups 6 involved, it is wonderful to see them participating in and enjoying this annual event. The seven rounds were played in an excellent spirit of good sportsmanship. Overall School Champion for the second year running was Julian Kirkpatrick (Year 4). Year level champions were also determined on the day and included Oliver Tiong (Year 1), Tobias Cheung (Year 2), Kasen Heiskanen (Year 3), Julian Kirkpatrick (Year 4), Jacob Camilleri (Year 5) and Eric Li (Year 6).

The future looks bright for chess to continue to grow in popularity at the Prep.
