Duke of Edinburgh Program

Duke of Edinburgh Program

The Duke of Edinburgh program is compulsory at the Bronze level for Year 9 boys. The Program exercises students in service and responsibility. The Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award leads to voluntary participation at the Silver and Gold Award level. There are four components to the Award:

  1. Leadership via community service - which assists students in looking beyond themselves.
  2. Expeditions - which develops resilience, endurance and character.
  3. Skill component - which develops new skills.
  4. Physical activity - which encourages students to engage in health, promoting activities such as sport.

Most students at King's complete various parts of the Award at one stage or another during their time at school. They also learn the discipline to keep records and follow up the expeditions with carefully written logs. This at times can be the most difficult task of all to organise oneself to complete the administration of the program. The Duke of Edinburgh program is another layer in the overall development of a young leader to equip him to successfully negotiate the environment he moves into after graduation.
