History of the Chapel

The Chapel was originally built on The King’s School site at Parramatta.  Designed by Loweish and Moorhouse and built of stone from a quarry near Homebush, the foundation stone for the Chapel was laid on 21 October 1887.  On the 6 February 1889, the chapel was consecrated, and was extended in 1908 to lengthen the naveIn 1920, funds were made available which enabled the Chapel to be further extended as a War Memorial to the many Kingsmen who had enlisted during World War I. These extensions included the transept, the baptistry and the bell tower. Moorhouse designed this extension which was dedicated on 10 June 1922.

The stone was quarried from the original site, which helped to give the Chapel a unified appearance.  Interestingly, the stonemason was the son of the original contractor.

The northern apse with its beautiful leadlight windows, was dedicated as a memorial to veterans of World War II.  All seven windows were designed by Norman Carter.  Miss Daphne Mayo of Brisbane designed the bronze knightly figure, a youth out for adventure, to commemorate the Kingsmen who lost their lives during the war.

It was agreed to move the Chapel to the Gowan Brae site when The King’s School site was sold in 1964.  The King’s School held its last service in the Chapel at the Parramatta site in 1968.  The move to the new site commenced in 1971, stone by stone, and the Chapel was re-dedicated in the following year.
