Boarding overview

The King's School was established in 1831 as Australia's oldest boarding school. Since then it has been a leader in residential education and is currently one of the largest boys' boarding schools in the land. It has a strong connection with country families, but also welcomes boarders from city families and from overseas. Boarders at King's are the “heart and soul” of the School, as it is their home during term time. They constitute over a third of the student body.

They enjoy the freedom of having access to spacious grounds that are the envy of most schools and they experience rich opportunities for leadership and personal growth. The academic environment is supportive and proven to add value, whilst the sporting program is second to none. They have unparalleled access to excellent facilities and learning opportunities.

Boarders at King's are part of a unique community of staff and students. Over 40 trained residential staff serve the needs of King's boarders . Commencing in 2011, King's is undertaking a major development of its residential program which involves the amalgamation and upgrading of its senior boarding houses. These major works are expected to conclude in 2014 or early 2015.

Why Board at King's?

The extensive grounds (320 acres) provide ample space for boys to move, play, grow and learn. Most boys are very happy at King's, and typically, boarders form lifelong friendships. Flexible boarding arrangements are available - full, weekly or occasional and flexible leave arrangements maximise opportunities for interaction with family and friends.

Study routines and supervised ‘prep’ (homework) help many boarders to achieve better academic results than they might have achieved if they lived at home. Additional academic support (at no extra charge) is readily available, for example tutors on duty in the Boarding Houses, evening tutors in the Centre for Learning and Leadership, Study Hall, free on-line tutoring each Sunday to Friday evenings from 4.00pm-11.00pm.

The experience of living in community develops tolerance and independence and it offers significant leadership opportunities. Boarders enjoy convenient access to an extensive range of activities and facilities (sporting, social, cultural, recreational and spiritual), and there is a weekend activity program which affords the students opportunities to attend dances, representative sporting fixtures, and multicultural dining experiences.

In the Health Centre there is a registered nurse on duty 24 hours each day and visiting doctors and physiotherapists are on call. The School also has a full time Counsellor to assist in cases of suspected bullying or other pastoral matters.

Boarders benefit from a specialist kitchen and dining hall with excellent food and plenty of it - even for growing boys!
