Biology

Learning about the history and philosophy of science, as it relates to the development of the understanding, utilisation and manipulation of living systems by the human species, is an integral part of the study of contemporary biology and assists students to recognise their responsibility to conserve, protect, maintain and improve the quality of all environments for future generations.

With this in mind, The King's School offers an exciting Biology program based on student inquiry and first hand investigation/research. The Year 11 course focuses on Australian ecosystems with an emphasis on the unique adaptations of our flora and fauna. An exciting rock platform field-study gives the boys a first-hand appreciation of the nature and practice of biological studies. Students also learn about the fundamental similarities that exist between all living things, from cell structure to complex body systems and finish by looking at different theories and evidence to account for the origins of life.

The Year 12 course begins with a look at the way in which the internal environments of living things (temperature, water levels etc) are controlled before focusing on concepts related to genetics and evolution. As a part of this unit, boys are encouraged to think ethically about contemporary issues concerning biotechnology and reproductive technologies. The final core topic looks at health and disease, the nature of pathogens and our immune system, and current practices employed to combat these rising threats. The HSC year finishes with an option - currently on communication which focuses largely on the human auditory and visual systems.

Chemistry

A study of Chemistry in Years 11-12 enables the boys to acquire knowledge and understanding about fundamental concepts related to matter and its interactions. These interactions are placed in an historical context and their changing applications to personal, social, economic, technological and environmental situations are investigated.

TKS Science - Chemistry

Much of the course involves experimental work and research activity. In the program of study the boys examine how materials are produced and the changing demands for these materials. This leads to a consideration of renewable resources and possible new energy sources in the near future. Some important industrial processes are studied in detail and in particular how the chemical industry monitors and manages large scale production.
One option is chosen for in depth study from a list which includes Industrial Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry and the Chemistry of Corrosion.

Through Chemistry a boy can learn to think about the world in a particular way. It encourages each boy to use inference, deductive reasoning and creativity. Chemistry presumes that the interactions within and between matter in the universe occur in consistent patterns that can be understood through careful, systematic study. Chemistry is academically challenging, stimulating and rewarding.
