Personal Development, Health and Physical Education in New South Wales is compulsory in Years 7-10, with its study being optional in Years 11 and 12. The subject provides the opportunity for boys to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health and wellbeing of themselves and others, now and in the future.

Year 7-10 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education The course provides opportunities for boys to learn about, and practice ways of, adopting and maintaining a healthy, productive and active life. It also involves boys learning through movement experiences that are both challenging and enjoyable, and improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence in a variety of contexts. The range of issues examined in the classroom includes:
- Physical activity
- Mental health
- Drug use
- Sexual health
- Nutrition
- Supportive relationships
- Personal safety
- Gender roles
- Discrimination
Year 9 and 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS Elective)
The aim of this elective is to enhance boy's capacity to participate effectively in physical activity and sport, leading to improved quality of life for themselves and others. The content of the elective is organised in modules within the following three areas of study:
- Foundations of Physical Activity
- Physical Activity and Sport in Society
- Enhancing Participation and Performance
The areas of major focus for boys in the course include:
- Body Systems and energy for physical activity
- Issues in Sport
- Sports coaching
- Australia's Sporting identity
Years 11 and 12 Senior Course
The Preliminary Course (Year 11) examines a range of areas that underpin health and physical activity. This includes the thoughts people have about health and physical activity, the management of personal health and physical activity and a closer examination of how the body moves. As well as these compulsory areas, boys have the option of studying further areas such as first aid, outdoor recreation, composition and performance and fitness choices.
In the HSC Course (Year 12), boys focus on major issues related to Australia's health status. They also look at factors that affect physical performance. Again there are various options offered, with boys studying sports medicine and improving performance.

Which students will be interested in the course?
The course has been designed for all boys in Years 11 and 12 who have an interest in the areas of physical activity and health. The course builds upon the experiences gained in Years 7-10 by introducing more detailed study.
What career pathways does PDHPE lead to?
The 2 unit course provides a direct link with study and vocational pathways in the areas of recreation, sports science, human movement, paramedical and health sciences.
